Reflection

I interpret blogging to be a commitment where one must acquire if they choose to adopt it. Besides that, I consider bloggers to be consistent with their blogs and not choose to blog for only a day and never post up fresh new comments as time goes by.

In addition, my experience as a blogger is the interaction with other bloggers as a part of an effort. However as time goes by or after building a networking so to speak, people gradually begin to be interested in one’s blog and start linking their comments on the article which is posted. In my opinion, I think that this is a rewarding experience because bloggers get to share their knowledge and monetary benefits.

Subsequently, some of the challenges faced while blogging is the time and commitment spent. In my opinion, readers would prefer to read about quality articles. Thus, a blogger actually have to post about articles which stir an interest in the audience and not just blog for fun. Besides that, I think one should also ‘market’ their blog out to the public. This is because, after all the effort spent in blogging, bloggers would definitely want to interact with other blogs and online forum. It brings great feedback and general referrals.

Meanwhile, nobody would actually want to read mundane writing. Hence I believe one don’t have to be all funny and clear cut about the article but one should definitely acquire the skills of passion for writing, fresh and unique ideas.

Finally, the standpoint I adopt as a blogger is to understand that if a blogger wants high readership for their blogs then focused more towards ‘you’ instead of always talking about ‘I and me’. Talking about what’s good for the readers will stimulate their interest and enable them to share their thoughts and ideas. Hence, this will also benefit me in a way because I get to contribute my interest and share the different resources provided.

Blogging and Big Bucks (Posting Four)

I believe the article ‘Blogging and big bucks’ is rather audacious but speaks the truth in regards to the many bloggers in Malaysia today. On the whole, this article basically talks about the advantages and disadvantages of online advertising and its downfall of it.

According to the article, bloggers post up ads on their blogs to earn revenue through user-created content. In addition, it speaks about co-partners Tiah and Cheo teamed up to set up a blogging advertising community named Nuffnang Sdn Bhd (
http://www.nuffnang.com.my/) which is the first blog- advertising community in Malaysia.

Nuffnang enables organizations that run businesses to put up advertisements on blogs. On the other hand, Tiah said that "We saw that there was no system here that enables local companies to reach out to the blogging community, advertising on traditional media is very costly and the cheaper method of passing flyers is not effective." In my perception, I interpret it to be true because online advertising in definitely more cost effective compared to printing it in a newspaper because one has to pay for space. Apart from that, there would be so many other companies wanting to post their advertisement on printed materials such as the newspaper, hence one would definitely have to wait for time and probably be in queue.

In addition, as to why one would choose to opt for an online advertising is because according to Walsh (2006, p.35) Readers would have more choices in responding and hence choose to interact with the advertiser. Besides that, Walsh also mentions that online materials could allow advertisers to choose the arrangement of colour, graphics and animation which they cannot do so in print documents. It also provides an opportunity for the audiences to click on hyperlinks to navigate to another page if they come across something of their interest in another site.

In conclusion, I personally believe that online advertising would provide a greater insight to more specific audiences compared to print who contains more towards a general audience. This is due to the fact that online advertising could create an opportunity to those audiences who specifically want to learn about the products and services promoted by the organization. As Bartell says organizations who advertise their products on blogs (as an online medium) are generally used as a business tool which is useful for knowledge acquisition, knowledge storage and knowledge distribution. (Bartell, 2006)

The Principles of Design (Posting Three)

The article the Principles of Design by Joshua David McClurg-Genevese speaks about the basic factors of designing for the web and how it guides the purpose for good design practice. In addition, it also speaks about how it affects the arrangement of objects within a composition.

On the whole, my interpretation of a good document design is based on simplicity and how users could interact with the website. I believe that if a website is simply not credible and contradicts the way it writes then users would choose another site which could provide more information to them. This is true when Jakob Nielson says ‘If a website is not easy to use, people simply leave’ (Nielson, 2006)

The author of the article also talks about some of the following examples of the principles of good design. He writes that most designers should focus on the balance which is the arrangement of the objects in a given design and comes in two forms symmetrical and asymmetrical. Then he moves on to rhythm which creates a sense of movement, and can establish pattern and texture. Besides that, he’s article also mentions about proportion which is the comparison of dimensions or distribution of forms, and lastly the dominance and unity. (McClurg, J. 2005)

As I mentioned prior to the examples of the principles of good design, users might tend to read an article if it is based on simplicity as well as simple facts. Meanwhile, Nielson (2006) also says that ‘‘People rarely read web pages word by word; they scan the page, picking out individual words and sentences.’ (Nielson, 2006)

In addition, the multimodal text also plays an important factor in document design. Multimodal text is defined as spoken or written language as well as still or moving images. They may be produced on paper or electronic screen and may incorporate music and sound. (Walsh, 2006)
Subsequently, Walsh also says that multimodal text online develop meaning through the visual voice which includes positioning, perspective, offers and demands. In addition the visual style also plays an important element because it involves the arrangement of colour, graphics, animations and hyperlinks. (Walsh, 2006, p.35)

In conclusion, I consider the principles of design to be essential for web designers to follow if at all they would want a greater sense of readership and if they want users to interact with their websites and offer feedbacks.

Accepting Blogging As New Media (Posting Two)

I construe the article ‘Accept blogging as the new media’ posted on May 4, 2007 to be an arousing factor amongst our nation at present. Nevertheless, through my personal thought, I think there is a high degree conviction that the government would choose to discard such information because it might be a threat to their political movements.

Accepting blogging as something new should also be an arousing factor because according to Naughton “Thoughtful, articulate and well informed writers who have previously not had access to publication media (due to controlled access) have grasped the opportunity to air their views”. (Naughton, 2006) This then creates an inside that due to blogging people have become more bold to voice up their opinions and their thoughts.

As an abstract I have to agree with The National Union of Journalist president Norila Mohd Daud when she basically said that the “usage of internet uses the concept of uncensored borderless world which made it accessible to almost everyone. As such, any abuses by public officials can be immediately exposed on the Internet.”

In my opinion, I believe that there is nothing to hide if a person is speaking the truth. The government has implemented strict rules with regards to the Printing Presses and Publications Act as well as the Official Secrets Act (OSA) because politicians are afraid that citizens might question their movements towards our country and thus lead to political damage.

On the other hand, I must admit that Barisan Nasional's Kota Melaka MP Wong Nai Chee statement with regards to some forms of regulation was obligatory due to the context of race, culture and religion in the country. I would choose to agree with him. The reason is because, as blogging is spreading widely all across our country, some bloggers must take into consideration on the various types of people reading the blog and must be sensitive to their feelings as well.

As a conclusion, I would have a standpoint that bloggers should choose to blog wisely and not inflict or provoke emotions that could cause harm to the nations. Meanwhile, the government should also be in concurrence to be more lenient towards their rules and make it easier for the media to report the truth and not keeping secrets from the readers all the time.

NUJ Backs Bloggers Alliance (Posting One)

I consider the article ‘NUJ backs bloggers alliance’ to be speaking the truth about the many bloggers in Malaysia. This is due to the factor that the vice president from the Registrar of Societies says that Technorati, tracks 55 million bloggers worldwide, and only a minority of bloggers addressed current issues.

In my perception, I think that the Malaysian bloggers are not given a chance to express themselves proper enough because of the restrictions from the Printing Presses and Publications Act, and Official Secrets Act (OSA). According to Malik Imtiaz author of Defamation, Blogging and Nation Building, he said that “The reality is that press freedom in Malaysia is limited. The need for permits and the threats of closure and prosecution are not conducive, even where there is editorial will for freer publication.”

Thus, by saying things as such, the public do not have a chance to view their opinions freely and their opinions are limited. However, I also do agree with Encik Imtiaz when he mentioned that “Freedom of expression, however, did not mean one could go around slandering others”. In my interpretation, the public needs to know what information needs to be written and what should be kept in silence such as religion issues. I mean who would want to disrupt the peace and harmony of our country? By blogging without thinking, it is only going to provoke the anger of some such as the fanatics.

In addition, Mr Jeff Ooi, the vice president of the Registrar of Societies said that “The progress of ICT had changed the way people got their news, no longer only from newspapers but also online.” I choose to agree with this statement because according to Kevin Hunt, ‘usefulness and popularity of web pages is based on how well individuals and organisations use the technology to establish an online presence’. What he meant by this includes, the characteristic attitudes, habits and beliefs of an individual or group. (Bartell, 2006)

In my opinion to what both of them meant was, people no longer search the printed material for news. Thus, they choose to opt for online materials where the web pages play an important role as well. This might make it easier for users to ‘click’ when they choose to navigate into a certain page rather than searching for the pages through printed materials.

Purpose of My Blog

In my opinion, blogging has become a great phenomenon in the last couple of years. Hence some of the best known weblogs and authors could attract the kind of influence that might be a threat to certain targeted audiences who speaks their mind. In addition, bloggings are products of the authors own imaginations, interests, and it's probably the personal touch to how they compose which made them so popular, especially when it comes to political issues.

The purpose of my blog is to place my opinions and probably arguments on Media and Publishing Issues and covers topics such as technology and how people are urge to accept blogging as a new media, how trends have change.

My targeted audience will be those who are interested in learning more about the new media and how technology affects our lives for the better or for the worst.

Introduction

There are many ways to which people choose to blog. According to blogger.com, their definition of a blog is a personal diary, a daily pulpit, a collaborative space, a political soapbox, a breaking-news outlet, a collection of links or even one’s personal thoughts about the world. (Source: blogger.com)

In my opinion, one of the purposes as to why people blog is because, blogging is a medium where people can teach and learn from one another. Some use the blogs to ask stimulating questions, promote sharing of knowledge or even encourage alternative new ideas.

According to a recent study by "Blogging Asia: A Windows Live Report", significantly, about 50 per cent of bloggers in Malaysia use the medium to express their thoughts, mean while 63 per cent are interested towards the entertainment world. However, about 49 per cent of the bloggers used it as a channel to exchange their viewpoints among family and friends. Nevertheless, Malaysian bloggers share the same interest as most Asians where their blogs are mostly on technology, travel and music.

The significant reason as to why most people choose to blog and what they get out of it is because most blogs are used to share information which includes important data such as links to other resources, opinions, statistics, and much more. This then might be a useful source for most people who share a common interest or in a professional business to exchange ideas. In addition some blogs contains audio, video, and visuals elements to add up the interest.

Some classification of the different topics of blogs might include, sports, fashion, politics and etc. While some of the examples of media type might be sketchlog, tumblelogs, linklog or the vlog. Some of the elements which one must look at is the audiences and the purpose and outcomes.

It is important to look at the audiences for a blog. For example if a blog is regarding a school. Then one should know who the primary and secondary audiences are. Some of the primary example of this might be the students themselves or the teachers. Secondary audiences might be the parents or other local community members.

Some outcomes of blogging could cause interaction. Some blogs are focused on communicating between the person posting the entry and those who are commenting. The responses however may include expanded ideas, additional information or even critiques.

It is vital for a person who blog to belong in a certain community. This community is formed by a shared passion or interest. Many of times some e-mails have been sent to friends with the address of a particularly interesting web page but somehow end up sending it to the wrong person who don’t share the same interest.

An example of this would be a person who is so enthusiastic about fashion and then sent the email about the recent clothing label to a person who is interested in politics instead. Hence, a blogging community is essential because wouldn't it be good to get if one owns a web page where they could publish their comments of interest, making it a daily journal of thoughts and ideas.

There are many weblog’s great benefits according to Jakob Nielsen. One of it is that it actually frees a person from "Web design." It’s very simple when one writes a paragraph, clicks a button, and it's posted on the Internet. There is no need for visual design, page design, or any programming or server maintenance. Second benefit is that they're a Web-native content genre which relies on link and short postings. This is when someone finds something interesting on the other site and link to it. (Nielsen, J. 2005)

Newest trends of media publishing is the electronic publishing that is distinguished by creativity which is the birth of new forms of publishing media that borrow from the elements of the first two phases but somehow brings users to the new and original ways of communicating. (Nisenholtz, 2004)

Some examples includes from books to video games which creates profitable industries, and generate a new collective class of creative people to produce the content. (Nisenholtz, 2004) Thus, in my opinion on weblogging, it is just another tool for users to type in entries on their personal beliefs intended for a handful of friends and families to read it and post up comments which could be expressive and delight the user on an emotional level.
